Melrose Area Public
Schools
Sports
Melrose Area Public Schools offer the residents of District 740 a
comprehensive education; enhanced programming for both public and parochial students; a
unified campus for students in pre-K through twelfth grades; the latest in educational
technology; a skilled, experienced teaching staff; community education programs; a variety
of extracurricular activities; and a number of resources to help students succeed.
The educational program includes a solid foundation
in the basics, a healthy dose of electives, and classes to meet the needs of students at
all points on the educational spectrum. College and technical school credits are available
on-site to juniors and seniors during the regular school day. Students can graduate as
second quarter college sophomores by selecting available courses. An elementary gifted and
talented program is also available.
An alternative school is available to non-traditional
students. An early childhood and family education program serves youngsters from three
years of age to kindergarten and includes a parent component. A preschool special needs
program is also available. Adults can participate in a variety of community education
activities.
A three-year referendum that was passed by district
residents in 1994 resulted in additional physical education classes at both the public and
parochial schools, an art specialist at the public elementary and parochial schools, a
tutoring program, a reading program, expanded technology, additional counseling staff
(including a social worker), and a music specialist at the public and parochial schools.
The referendum was renewed in 1997 for an additional five years thus continuing these
excellent offerings.
The District serves 1,500 students on a unified campus in
Melrose but reaches out to the communities of Freeport, Greenwald, Meire Grove, New
Munich, Spring Hill, St. Martin, and St. Rosa. The campus includes a high school serving
grades seven through twelve; an elementary school that was completed in 1994, along with a
new theater, and a remodeled high school media center. Building projects completed in 1996
included two additional junior high classrooms and a gymnasium complex that will add
physical education space and space for extracurricular activities. In 1998 an ECFE (Early
Childhood Family Education) addition was completed.
Fine arts and extracurricular offerings include
band, chorus, speech, drama, knowledge bowl, a musical production, athletics, and
yearbook.
District residents have shown their commitment and
dedication to the area schools through their continued support of district programs,
through volunteer efforts, and through their participation in district-wide activities.
Commitment, comprehensive programs, and cooperation
help make District 740 an excellent place to learn!

MELROSE AREA
SPORTS
The Melrose Public Schools
offer programs, many of them for both boys and girls, in swimming volleyball,
tennis, football, basketball wrestling, gymnastics, golf, track and softball.
There is also boys’ and girls’ elementary basketball, little guy wrestling,
elementary volleyball, and elementary girls’ gymnastics.
Although the high school is still remembered for its
basketball dynasty in the 1970s, the Melrose Dutchmens athletic successes have come
in a wide variety of activities. Boy and girl swimmers regularly go to state meets.
Recently the school competed in wrestling, golf, football, and boys and girls track at the
state level. .
The Lady Dutchmen gymnastics team has created a
dynasty of their own and is considered one of the best in the area. The team has claimed
the conference championship and competed at the state level since 1990. They were crowned
state champions in both 1994 and 1995. The team still holds the state team record with a
score of 144.4.
One-hundred-fifty girls are involved in gymnastics
in grades 1-12. However, the greatest success of the Melrose Schools athletic program has
been that over the years, hundreds of boys and girls have been able to take part for their
own personal growth and satisfaction.
The City of Melrose and the school district combine to provide a
well-rounded group of activities for its summer recreation program. These programs for
boys and girls of all ages include swimming, softball, baseball, track, and other
activities.
